  • Tanlines: New Album 'Mixed Emotions' 19th March
    29 Feb, 2012 news

"A great song can stick with someone for their whole life," says Jesse Cohen, one half of Brooklyn's Tanlines. Made alongside his musical brother and the voice of the band, Eric Emm, Tanlines debut album 'Mixed Emotions' is a deeply personal and unique pop album.

Mixed by legendary Grammy award winning record producer Jimmy 'The Senator' Douglass (Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Led Zeppelin, Gang of Four, Jay-Z) - who described the process as "life changing" for him - it is a record that pushed the band to expand their sonic ambitions and take them away from their previous experiences.

Songs were initially written just on guitar, and were later fleshed out using the band's distinctive palette of electronic and organic sounds.
Emm honed his voice, a confident and tranquil baritone, and focused on lyricism in order to lend music sonically aimed at the dancefloor an unexpected emotive edge. These songs address loss, the passage of time, and the lessons and warnings of accumulated knowledge gleaned by someone who has spent an entire lifetime in music. Emm assesses his newfound lyrical earnestness and immediacy a little more candidly - "I just reached a point in my life where I wasn't afraid and didn't give a shit."

Sometimes painful, sometimes transcendent, and ultimately a very precise labour of love, 'Mixed Emotions' is a vivid experience. Songs pulse and linger, filled with unusual textures, bubbling synths and driving kick drums, which juxtapose the more melancholic concerns that run through the lyrics. Blurring the lines between synthetic and organic, "the real" and "the fake", happy and sad, 'Mixed Emotions' is the sound of stadium pop in microcosm. And as a result, it is one of the most remarkable debut albums you will hear in 2012.

  • LCD Soundsystem: 'Shut Up & Play The Hits' Documentary
    12 Jan, 2012 news

On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career.

The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with NEW YORK magazine calling the event "a marvel of pure craft" and TIME magazine lamenting "we may never dance again." 'SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS' is both a narrative film documenting this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.

  • Underworld: Music Directors of 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
    20 Dec, 2011 news

The official press release from LOCOG (the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) explains:
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today announced that British electronic music pioneers Underworld have been appointed Music Directors for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The appointment completes the team of senior creatives that will lead the direction of the London 2012 Ceremonies.

Underworld duo Rick Smith and Karl Hyde will work alongside Oscar winning British filmmaker and producer Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremony and will be responsible for all the music in the three-hour ceremony taking place on 27 July next summer.

Underworld and Danny Boyle have enjoyed a long and diverse collaboration since Underworld's track 'Born Slippy' featured in Boyle's film 'Trainspotting'. Over the following fifteen years the three developed a close relationship, with Smith and Hyde supplying specially created music for 'A Life Less Ordinary', 'The Beach' and co-scoring the 2007 sci-fi film 'Sunshine'. In 2010 they came together again to work on the critically acclaimed National Theatre production of 'Frankenstein'.

Danny Boyle said: "Appointing Underworld to direct the music in the Olympic Opening Ceremony is the final piece of the jigsaw for the team of leading British creatives who will deliver the ceremonies,"

"What's interesting about working with them is how much broader their taste is than you might imagine. With 'Frankenstein' we really saw how far we could take a broader approach than we'd used together on the films."

Rick Smith said: "The 'Frankenstein' project at the National Theatre was our opportunity to test ourselves as writers and music directors in a completely new environment. Danny asked us to take responsibility for every aspect of the sound and music and encouraged us to draw on a wide musical palette. It was a challenging piece of work with its roots in classic literature, that turned out to be the most fun I've ever had".

Karl Hyde said: "We want to leave people with a musical memory of the show rather than a purely visual one. It's a great honour to be asked to do this and one we're taking very seriously - it's certainly not something we'll get the chance to do again"
